History & Significance
About Dwarkadhish Temple
Dwarkadhish Temple was built in 1814 by Seth Gokul Das Parikh, a treasurer of the Gwalior State under the Scindia dynasty and a devoted follower of Lord Krishna. The temple is dedicated to Lord Dwarkadhish – Krishna in his form as the King of Dwarka – worshipped here alongside Radharani, and is maintained by followers of the Pushtimarg (Vallabhacharya) tradition of Vaishnavism.
The main sanctum holds a lustrous black stone idol of Lord Dwarkadhish, about two-and-a-quarter feet tall, shown with four hands holding a mace, a Sudarshana Chakra, a conch and a lotus, alongside a white marble image of Radharani. Five rows of intricately carved pillars divide the courtyard into sections, and the walls and ceilings are covered in vivid paintings depicting Krishna’s birth, his Raas Leela, and other episodes from his life.
Standing close to Vishram Ghat on the Yamuna, in the heart of old Mathura’s bustling lanes, the temple is as much a part of the city’s daily rhythm as its spiritual life – many visitors combine their darshan here with the Yamuna Aarti at the ghat and a walk through the surrounding markets.
