History & Significance

About Krishna Janmabhoomi

According to Hindu tradition, this is the spot where Lord Krishna was born to Devaki and Vasudeva, inside the prison cell of the tyrant king Kansa. The temple complex is built around this Garbha Griha (birth chamber), making it one of the most sacred sites for followers of Krishna anywhere in the world.

Tradition holds that the first shrine at this site was raised by Krishna’s great-grandson, Vajranabha, thousands of years ago. Over the centuries the site saw repeated cycles of construction and destruction under different rulers. The temple complex seen today took shape through a long rebuilding effort led by devotees and reformers in the 20th century, with the Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi Trust formally established in 1951.

The wider complex today includes the Keshavdev temple, the Bhagavata Bhavan, the Garbha Griha shrine, and a museum of artefacts connected to Krishna’s life – making it as much a place of history and heritage as of daily worship.
