History & Significance
About Durga Mandir Varanasi
Durga Mandir, also known as Durga Kund Mandir or the “Monkey Temple,” was built in the 18th century by Rani Bhabani, a devout Bengali queen of the Natore estate. According to local legend, the presiding idol of Goddess Durga is swayambhu – not carved by human hands but said to have appeared on its own at this very spot.
The temple is raised in North Indian Nagara style, with a multi-tiered shikhara made up of many small sikharas joined together, and the whole structure is painted a deep red with ochre to match the colour associated with Durga, the goddess of strength and power. Inside, devotees can see elaborately carved and engraved stones, alongside subsidiary shrines to Lakshmi, Saraswati, Kali and Bhairavnath.
Beside the temple lies the rectangular Durga Kund, a tank once connected to the river Ganga and still used in rituals such as Nag Panchami. The temple is a major centre of Shakti worship and draws especially large crowds during Navratri, when Durga Puja is celebrated with great devotion.
